Coffee can heat your home, and even cook your dinner – find out why!

an enterprising Melbourne company
has found an ingenious use for one of the city’s biggest waste products, coffee
grinds. The tiny startup company has managed to turn the leftovers from your
morning cuppa into fuel that can heat your home or even cook your dinner. Is
there anything more wondrous than coffee? That’s a rhetorical question, of course
there isn’t and for its next trick that morning magic is going to rescue the
planet. Saving loads of trees that don’t have to get chopped down and even coal
or brown coal that you could swap this out with as well.
Max Middleweek startup company Zero Impact has found a way to turn used
coffee grounds into flammable briquettes. So surprisingly coffee has a really
great energy density and the product we’ve made so far has 20% more energy
than firewood. So the bean that warms our souls can also warm our homes. We would
probably do maybe one and a half 72 litre rubbish bags get thrown out, a day. Every day Australia we throw
out the waste from 24 million cups of coffee and this can be heating your home
in winter, for your next barbecue, or your next camping trip. At Melbourne’s Ladro restaurant they’ve already trialled the coffee briquettes in their pizza ovens and
the verdict.. it’s pretty good actually, nice and hot, and good for pizzas. If
you’re anything like me you’ve got a couple of burning questions and the
answer to the first one is yes, it does smell vaguely of coffee, and no it
doesn’t make the food taste of coffee It’s still small-scale under $10 a dozen
not yet cheap, but a drink that warms you twice that’s got to be grounds for
celebration Nick Etchells for 10 News First.
