Green Tea in 60 Seconds

Green tea comes from the same plant as black
tea, with the only difference being the polyphenols in green tea are not oxidised. Green tea contains a number of polyphenols,
the most abundant of which are tannins and catechins, which are said to improve cardiovascular health, act as strong antioxidants in the body and aid with weight loss. When consumed, these polyphenols cannot be
absorbed by the gut, but do interact with the bacteria which colonise the gut. Here
they act as prebiotics to bifidobacteria and lactobacillius species, as well as inhibit
the growth of pathogens such as helicobacter pylori and clostridium difficile. Lactobacillius
can metabolise these polyphenols into antioxidants which can be absorbed by the gut, and provide
antioxidant support to the body. These polyphemols have shown an ability to
stimulate thermogenesis which can provide some help with weight loss, but this mechanism
is yet to be confirmed. Like all polyphenols, tannins and catechins
are mildly toxic, but at low levels are beneficial to us because they stimulate the immune system,
making it more responsive to infection. Harmful dosages are near impossible to obtain by drinking
green tea, but can be obtained if you take large amounts of green tea supplements. For more information on how green tea benefits
