“I woke up all sweaty at 3 am!” | But first coffee with Kalle Riedle

Today my guest is Karl-Heinz Riedle.
Kalle, are you ready to begin? Definitely, but shall we
get a coffee first? Of course. But first coffee So Kalle, what coffee are
you going to have? Normally I’d have an espresso, but
today I’ll have a cappuccino. OK, well I’ll stick with
a café crème. Are you a big coffee person,
do you drink a lot of it? Quite a lot – at my age I have to drink a
bit more coffee so that I can wake up! But since I was at Lazio in Italy I’ve been
an enthusiastic coffee drinker. So you really need it to get
going every morning. Exactly – normally with just an espresso,
but sometimes a cappuccino too. OK. But that’s not really what
we’re here to talk about – I’d like to talk to you about
following your instincts. Ah, look at that – thank you! For me you’re exactly the right
person to talk to about this, because I always saw you as a footballer
who played by instinct. You didn’t hesitate, you just did what
immediately occurred to you. Is that accurate? Would you say that
about yourself, on the pitch at least? Yes, you could put it like that – I definitely wasn’t someone
who followed all the tactical instructions! A lot of what I did was based on gut
feeling, so yes, that’s accurate. Champions League final in 1997, two goals – is
that something people still talk to you about? Yes, of course, with social media everyone
can see the clips from back then, so people often talk to me about
those goals, but not just that: they talk to me about our success here, and about
the team we have right now, so various things. You’ve said that the night before that game
you dreamt about scoring those goals. Is that a game in your career
where you said, “I knew what was going to happen, I can
rely completely on my gut feeling to know when that moment will come,
when to jump and put it in”? Well I didn’t dream of that exact situation, but I really
did dream I would score two goals somehow. I was lying there drenched in sweat
at 3 o’clock in the morning… Were you really stressing out
about scoring two goals? No, but obviously you’re right in the middle
of it, and then it happened the next day. But it was definitely a game where I remember
a lot of things, looking back, because even during the warm-up routine
it was like we were in a trance. We all knew what a chance we had, we
knew how much that game meant, so it was definitely the
game of my career. I’d like to ask you some
quickfire questions – simply answer based on your gut feeling, on
what your instinct tells you. Is that OK? OK, I’ll try! Coffee to go, or to drink in? Drink in. Cook for yourself, or get someone
to cook for you? Cook for myself. I really enjoy cooking! Very good! Sardinia or
the Seychelles? There can only be one:
Sardinia, of course! Sunglasses or skiing goggles? Skiing goggles. Golf or football? More golf these days, but
football of course! As I know from experience.
Open-top car or estate car? Erm… estate car. With two dogs an open-top
car isn’t very useful – you need more space. OK. So, Kalle, thank you for
taking the time to be here, and hopefully we’ll have a coffee
together again soon.
